How It All Started
The Top of the Mark began its storied journey in 1939 when visionary hotel owner George D. Smith transformed the penthouse of the Mark Hopkins into a sky-high haven for the elite. But it wasn’t just luxury that defined its legacy. During World War II, it became a place of deep emotion and camaraderie as servicemen would gather for a "Squadron Shot," raising a toast for good luck, a poignant farewell before shipping off to war. Their wives and sweethearts would later gaze out the Golden Gate Bridge, watching for ships to sail away or to return, hoping to catch a glimpse of their loved ones. The bar became a symbol of both farewell and homecoming, of sacrifice and hope. After the war, its reputation only grew, drawing everyone from Hollywood stars to world leaders to the local social elite. Through the decades, the Top of the Mark became more than just a bar with a view — it became a living testament to the moments that shaped lives and history, a place where the echoes of the past blend with the vibrant energy of today.
